FOLK SONGS : |
|
Sikkim has a rich tradition of singing folk songs. The different communities of
the state have different folk songs, which are gradually disappearing, or being
replaced by Hindi cinema songs, Hindi pop songs, English pop songs, or other modern
forms of songs. The folk songs of Sikkim are under intense pressure from the mass
media, whose aesthetics are dominated by Hindi pop standards. Most of the folk songs
of different communities have been listed under their ethnic culture. Some of the
important folk songs could be mentioned as follows:

The Limboo community is very rich in folk songs. Their folk songs have been divided
into five groups namely:
|

(a)
|
Khyali - dialogue songs, where the young boys and girls express their day to day
romantic feelings, views on poetic language with tune.

(b)
|
Love Songs: |

(i)
|
Shorokpa Pallam Samlo;
|
|
(ii)
|
Pallam Samlo; and
|
|
(iii)
|
Taamkey Ookrna Palam SamIo;
|
|
|
All the love songs listed above, are sung by the young girls and boys, while dancing
or working, and they provide a forum of courtship for marriage. The song may continue
for a few hours to several days and nights, continuously. |

|
Hakpare Samlo - it is known as the "gentlemen and women song", which is sung
in special festive occasions by the elder people for entertainment. |

(d)
|
Nisammang Sewa Samlo - Ceremonial songs sung as inaugural songs on festive occasions
by the young boys and girls; and
|
|
(e)
|
Ke Lang Samlo- A song sung while dancing Ke Lang on special occasions or for
entertainment (Subba, 1999: 208-213). |
