PUBLIC LIBRARIES

   The library facilities in the State was initially set up during the reign of Maharaja of Sikkim probably in the 60s. However, it became functional quite actively in the society only after the merger of the State in the Indian Union. A community center library was set up with a full fledged custodianship of Mrs R.D Ralchung as Curator some times in 1964 and building of collections in the library began steadily. The library facilities in the State are much behind than others. Persistent effort is, nevertheless being made to expand and popularize this important facility in the District and Sub-Divisions with the sole objective of promoting the public reading habit and creation of well informed civil societies. Some of the developments under this sector since 1977-78 onwards that deserve mention are as follows;

1977-78:

District libraries at Namchi in South, Galshing in West and mangan in North districts were established with one each librarian and a peon.

1994-95:

Sub-Divisional Libraries at Chungthang, North, Pakyong, East, Ravongla in South and Soreng in West District were set up in respective Sub-Divisional Administrative Complexes.

2001-02:

Then Community Centre Library at Gangtok was upgraded to State Central Library and Special schemes from ministry of Culture, Government of India through its Nodal Agency, Raja Rammohan Roy Library Foundation (RRRLF), Kolkata were initially introduced in the State. In order to strengthen the library movement as well as to monitor the schemes of the Foundation, a State Library Committee was formed in the same year.
